The program of installing teak benches in memory of or in honor of loved ones began in 1985. The benches are imported by British American Marketing Services, Ltd. and constructed of teak from trees that by law must be at least 100 years old before being cut. WPBF acts as a liaison between those interested in purchasing a bench and the city departments that must approve a location for installation. All benches have "White Plains Beautification Foundation" inscribed in the back rail, in addition to the text ordered by the party purchasing the bench. As of 2011, over 100 benches have been installed throughout the city, including a bench dedicated in June 2008 in Druss Park to Hon. Robert F. Ruger, former White Plains Councilman and former president of WPBF.
